Made of Breath Only is one of my go-to rainy day albums (I imagine because of the cover art?). Hailstones and the Edge of Everything floor me everytime.

When I discovered this band on July the 20th 2020 I (the album Love Of Cartography, my first of them then) wouldn't have guessed that this album would be already a classic in my music world 5 days after. It brings me to an amazing far away planet, where Sleepmakeswaves are legendary, and there are only 6 hours of daylight every day the whole year, it's always very cold, the night sky is always black, puprle and dark blue. A very progressive and positive planet. There's even a awesome futuristic big subway station on the planet and many escalators, I love to hang around there, there are many lights glowing in different colours. Outside there are many big crystals growing to the air. This year I finally dared to discover another album of them, "Made Of Breath Only" and it's awesome as well, but with a more glacial atmosphere but still with that certain positive feeling. I still can't believe it's nearly as great as the legendary (in my world) LoC.

I firmly disagree. I love how up-front, almost euphoric their music can be, yet it also calms you and makes your thoughts drift away, before the riff hits you again and the melody catches your intention.. and it goes up again.. Sleepmakeswaves may not deliver the most profound post-rock, but their music is a rollercoaster-like adventure that emotionally hits you on any of its highs and lows.

"...and so we destroyed everything" still touches me the most of their whole discography.. it's their profoundest piece of work, imo, and its the perfect blend of atmosphere, playfulness and heaviness. their following works are louder, heavier and, of course, more playful and experimental. They are more couragious in general (and I like them a lot), but lack the dramatic undertone, the emotional depth of this one. "a gaze blank and pitiless as the sun" makes me imagine a whole life with all its ups and downs and an unclear ending, which has a cathartic effect one me nontheless. So does the whole album.

I don't see any blatant similarities between "perfect detonator" and "radio protector" except that both songs are mind-blowing post-rock songs made by two great bands and as such belong to the best examples of a more energetic but less atmospheric direction of post-rock, even though this classification is, of course, more than superficial.

I think that's my problem with it; I've seen them live a few times now and they're phenomenal and it just doesn't translate on record.
