? She is one of the most popular/recognizable "indie" artists of the 90s/00s. Been nominated for so many awards it has its own wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_awards_and_nominations_received_by_Bj%C3%B6rk) Also the most famous person from her home country, easily, which has to count for something. I think it is hard to imagine with our stale culture now but there was absolutely a time when someone as kooky as Bjork had mainstream appeal

gotta remember that her first couple albums were way more accessible than the stuff she makes now

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand bjork. her humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical listener's head. There's also bjork's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into her characterisation - her personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of her lyrics, to realize they're not just cool - they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike bjork truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in bjork's existencial catchphrase "it rhymes with jerk" which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as bjork's genius unfolds itself on their phones. What fools...

Bjork's like, "let me make arguably my best song ever, 40 years in to my career," just because she can.

Most of those who consider Utopia or Fossora her best album primarily listen to pop, it seems they enjoy things because they are new, not because they are good. That explains the disproportionate love for her last two albums, which are probably among the worst: the permanent offbeat, lack of melodies and atonality empties my soul. The songs go nowhere.

I feel like this has also affected top listeners on this app too. Many listeners on the first page have switched to oral.
