From the "Unholy Trinity" Trilogy, this is my absolutely most favourite Record.

Having listened to this album on the walkman, on a winter night, in a chalet, the window open on the mountain, the fir trees, the cold, the dark, will remain one of the best memories of my life.

I appreciate every aspect of this album, it's totally perfect. From the almost absolute lack of bass tone to the 8 second pauses in-between songs to the guitar sound that is thin and lo-fi but at the same time demanding and powerful as it cuts through the mix to compliment Nocturno Culto who is at his best here.

Incredible atmosphere and some of the most brilliant production/mixing I've heard on any album. In the strictest sense, it's "lo-fi," but in other ways it has a power we don't normally associate with lo-fi -- for instance, the thunderous toms from Fenriz that rumble to the forefront at times, and the buzzsaw guitars certainly can't be said to be lacking power. On top of that, this is probably Nocturno Culto's best performance on vocals, at least among the so-called "Big 4"/"Classic 4" Black Metal albums from the early/mid-90s lineup. And Fenriz has contributed some great evil/occult lyrics as well to go along with the hellish sonic assault they've whipped up this time. Fantastic, razor sharp serrated riffs all around. One of the best (Black) Metal albums of the 90s.

Forgot to mention Fenriz's drums are also fantastic throughout, especially on "Inn i de dype skogers favn" and "Crossing the Triangle of Flames," which make for a fucking amazing one-two punch to close out this masterpiece.

I'm starting to think that too tbh. A blaze in the northern sky doesn't have the best replay value to me, like this album.

Telepath27
Their best album and quite arguably the pinnacle of Norwegian black metal. TH doesn't have anything on this.

It's not an Unholy Trilogy. It's a Pentalogy. Beginning with 'A Blaze in the Northern Sky' and ending with the wildly underrated 'Total Death'. And 'Under a Funeral Moon' is its centerpiece.

I can't believe that some people prefer "Transilvanian Hunger" over this release. IMO "Transilvanian Hunger" is one of Darkthrone's weakest albums. I mean, just compare it to this masterpiece or "A Blaze In The Northern Sky", or "Panzerfaust". These albums have variety, they have a more powerful riffs, which are amazing, they have speed variations, evil-sounding slow parts. I suppose i will get a lot of hate because of this comment, but i don't care. "Under a Funeral Moon" is one of the best black metal albums ever... Just hear the self-titled song or "Summer of The Diabolical Holocaust"... a damn hymns and black metal symbols.

This album legitimately frightened me that first time I listened to it six years ago. I can only describe it as ethereally raw and ghastly music.

A bit weaker than A Blaze In The Northern Sky, still a black metal classic though.

Even though it is Black Metal, the sound quality could be better. I prefer A Blaze in the Northern Sky and Transilvanian Hunger
