I have to disagree. i think vocals work really well with Latitudes, they lend more contrast to their sound and make it richer. Actually two of my favourite Latitudes song have vocals. Now on the other hand, an instrumental band that got almost ruined with vocals is Long Distance Calling. So glad they returned to the exclusively instrumental stuff on their last record.

my gripe with the current post-rock scene is very similar to my issue with post-metal. the songwriting has come to be pigeonholed into such a specific formula that only understands the surface level of what made the earlier, more influential bands great. for example, when you look at a band like gy!be, you see a band that took a very classical approach to songwriting and recontextualized it to a more rock oriented instrumental ensemble. a result of this songwriting is a number of effective crescendos, but interspersed between these moments of catharsis are moments of textural and atmospheric development- not necessarily for the purpose of buildup, just for the sake of progressing the song through its multiple emotional tones. the pattern I've noticed with the hundreds of other post-rock bands is that they misinterpret this style of songwriting as being purely about buildup and release, rather than weaving any sort of musical story like the original bands did

I agree with that completely. If you enjoy Explosions in the Sky, the same goes for them. Their abstract expressionism is misinterpreted as permission to not express anything at all, and simply display textures without painting anything with them. It's the same story for many others as well.

And, without these clean vocals, it would just be a good post-metal release. As it stands, they completely elevate the album to something much stronger. They should be congratulated, not second guessed in favour of standard, boring harsh vocals. That's been done, let's move on.

yet with some harsher vocals the album may have been even stronger. << That's stupid beyond belief. Yeah, let's get some harsh vocals in and sound like the other 12213216545641365 bands in post metal. Think before you type.

v--- true, everything. perhaps it's only my dumb brain but i seem to witness a lot more black metal influences in the whole "genre" this year.. like the guitar on the second track (which is damn awesome). yet i'm not sure what to think of that. see the last boring alcest-release..

The vocals are pretty dodgy although they work on the second track though. By far the strongest on the album. The closing track is also pretty full on, I wasn't expecting the metal side to be increased like that. Maybe if the vocals were used more sparingly they wouldn't be so jarring. The ironic part is the music is a lot heavier yet instead of hardcore vocals they have decided to go with angelic clean vocals, yet with some harsher vocals the album may have been even stronger. Not sure, maybe the whole 'post-genre' scene is growing up and moving on and it'll take time to see the awesome results from that evolution.

it is indeed. don't think the vocals are that bad.. i'd have no problem with an entirely instrumental version though..
