I wish they'd have done some kind of 15th anniversary remaster of this. This is easily the best of their albums since the 90s but it sounds like shit with all the clipping

I really need to get the better versions. The original CD just sounds like utter fucking shit. It's a really good album, but god damn. Why didn't anyone say we can't put his out sounding like this?

Stupid loudness wars, stupid mixing madness. But still an enjoyable album. But fuck the mixing.

This is their worst album by far, much much worse than the notorious Load and Reload.

Is the version on Spotify the badly mastered version? It doesn’t sound very good but isn’t super noticeable

he mixed it, the mastering was done by another person, who already received it sounding like that and couldn't do anything but be embarrassed to have his name associated to it

Apparently Ted Jensen mastered it. That's actually really disappointing. And there's no way he recieved it like that unless it was already pre-mastered by someone unknown. The master tracks used for GH and the more recent iTunes remaster don't sound that bad. Not nearly. Someone doesn't wanna admit to doing a hack job with it.

I liked this when it first came out but like most people I absolutely hated the awful mastering. Pretty much haven't listened to this since 2008 and noticed there was a remaster from 2016. While it's still too loud and clippy at times it's definitely a major improvement over the original CD. I'll take what I can get. At least I can finally listen to this album in a somewhat tolerable way. The original CD was literally unlistenable with its fatiguing volume.

Looks like they have thrown all their best ideas to the first four tracks, cause the next songs vary from good (Suicide & Redemption) to abysmal (The Unforgiven III). Mediocre and inconsistent LP, surely better than St.Anger and Reload, but weaker than self-titled and not comparable to 80s records. Plus production, which is utterly fucked up.

Thank God for the 2015 remastered version. I downloaded it from the official website and it sounds amazing. I made the mistake of buying this album on vinyl thinking it would be the remaster, IT'S NOT! The remaster is only digital, so buy it from Metallica's website. It's amazing that my MP3s sound better then the vinyl I payed top dollar for and I'm pissed about it.

I have understood that most of the hate is due to loudness war. I got the CD, ripped it to my computer, and the sound looked awful, almost an even thick line of noise, no breathing room. "The Day That Never Comes" is the worst sounding song on the album, it sounds like low quality from a crappy radio, thanks to the awesome trend of digitally processing the sound to be as loud as possible to make people go: "This sounds louder than other music, therefore I like it and must buy multiple copies of it!". It sounds like a crappy radio because the loudness goes over the top and thus clips out, making the sound hacky. Apparently, members of the band defended the master saying that people who complain about it are in minority. They must have reconsidered, as in 2015 the album got a new master that sounds a lot nicer. However, this new master is digital only, it's not available on CD. It is known as the "mastered for iTunes" version.

If you want the remastered version but not on iTunes (not that iTunes is bad, but not everyone wants it from there) it's on their website: https://www.metallica.com/store/music/death-magnetic-digital-download/9422.html?cgid=Vinyl%20and%20CDs#start=13&sz=12

Sound of the album reminded me of that, from Slayer's "Christ Illusion" album, though a little bit better. Especially drums. This really is a good comeback, the first their decent album since 1991 release. I don't hate, though, albums after "The Black Album".

Damn, I love this album, but the regular production kills my hearing. I strongly recommend to get the iTunes version. It was exclusively remastered for Apple, like the rest of the Metallica albums. I wonder, how really good guys like Greg Fidelman and Ted Jensen could fuck up the original album that much. I mean, Rick Rubin is the master of distortion, but these two guys? I don't know.

They claimed that the tracks they had received from Rubin had already been distorted, so there was little they could do to fix them. Rubin messed with the tracks while the band was touring Europe, so they didn't really have anything to do with they way they sounded either. It was all Rubin's fault.

He used to be a very good/great producer, particularly in the late 80s. The first Danzig record would not be what it is without his involvement.

The first Danzig record is fantastic, but the production sounds as if it was recorded in a callbox. "Lucifuge", "HtGK" and "4p" sound way better. Glenn once said in an interview, that Rubin only showed up to check out what the engineers had done. Then he gave a go or a no-go. That's not what I call a "producer" !

are you kidding me!?? Suicide & Redemption is 10 minutes of epic progressive riffage. Especially with that sexy clean interlude & jame's guitar solo. How is that a snooze!??
