I went to NYC for the first time in my senior year with my school's travel club, and I'll always associate this song with the experiences I had on that trip. There's a nigh-ironic relationship between the poignant lyric "I am nothing of a builder" and discovering the claustrophobia of being surrounded by skyscrapers... it was all alien to me, because I'd never seen buildings nearly as tall as the buildings in New York. We stayed overnight in a hotel on the 25th floor(!), and I spent that night trying to comfort myself into the hope that I'd still be sleeping if the building were to tip over...

And just to lay with you/ There's nothing that I wouldn't do/ Save lay my rifle down...But the angles and the corners/ Even though my work is unparalleled/ They never seemed to meet/ This structure fell about our feet...But I won, so you lose/ Guess it always comes down to...

"You, my soiled teenage girlfriend/ how you furrow like a lioness." That line is so much sweeter than it has any reason to be.

Yeah, this song is pretty much perfect. There are a number of Decemberists songs that I could listen to over and over again for days, and this one tops the list.

Yeah, they never got as good as this. I think my taste in music is becoming more and more narrow-minded. :(
