This song in Apocalypse Now may be the best song placement in a movie, ever. I'm not saying there aren't other contenders, but the scene gives new dimension to the movie and to the song. Just incredible.

The overlay of violence in Willard’s drunken haze as exemplified during those opening scenes are really excellent examples of film editing. The music intensifies the effect of the flames of napalm piercing his memory and the screen as the song begins to creep back into the soundtrack.

To your point I would say it is maybe the most effective use of a Rock song in a movie. Virtually everything about the film has some chaotic element at play, and this extends to the production of it too. The song is pure musical chaos in how experimental with the vibe the band was going for. Also it’s just appropriate given how much that music, specifically from the first album, was listened to by those soldiers in those conditions. Young men the same age as Jim Morrison, expressing the primal thing of youth he did so well for only such a short time before burnout.

The version from NYC ‘70 is incredible, Robby’s playing is particularly excellent in expanding from what was essentially a pretty simple guitar part on the record into a journey into darkness, equally committed as the four of them would be when the vibe was just right. And you can tell in those recordings how much they are enjoying themselves. I heard it was rather intense when they played it in Mexico, where the song was so popular it came out as a single.

I wonder if Morrison put all of those mythological representations on purpose or not. Still, what an adventure to listen to it...

Flip the LP over and Break on Through to the Other Side. No end, only a beginning.

Essa voz com essa instrumentação... isso é teatro. Não é a toa que Jim chegou a chorar na sessão. Que catarse. Uma das minhas favoritas da vida.

i don't know if this is common knowledge but the Apocalypse now version of this song is available on Spotify, including the helicopter sounds. it's buried in a greatest hits compilation: The Future Starts Here: The Essential Doors Hits. it's 6:30 minutes.
