love how "Slim Slow Slider" is the best song on this great album and yet the least played on here

Yeah, I sort of agree. Although I'm sure you've listened to Nick Drake. Don't you reckon Pink Moon is one of the most genuine albums ever made?

I still love it. I do think that Five Leaves Left is underrated though, Saturday Sun might be one of the happiest of his songs and brings me joy whenever I hear it.

He never topped Astral Weeks, but it can almost be classified as a different genre completely. I wouldn't even call it just "music". It's so much more than that. That said, check out Veedon Fleece, Tupelo Honey, His Band and the Street Choir and don't expect anything like Astral Weeks. They, and many other albums of his, can be equally as pleasing in completely different ways.

While I can't disagree with the recommendations above, I'd add Saint Dominic's Preview. The two long songs on that are the closest I've heard in his discography to this album, though to be honest he still has a ton of albums that I haven't explored. And the short songs are equally good. It's probably my second favourite of his albums.

I am not a Van Morrison fan, I will say that right away, but this album is a masterpiece whose genius is hard to express adequately. It is an incredible album that is both out of this world and completely of this world, both incredibly sad and elating. As others have said, this is definitely one of of the best albums ever recorded, regardless of genre. In programming, C.A.R. Hoare once said about ALGOL-60, "Here is a language so far ahead of its time that it was not only an improvement on its predecessors but also on nearly all its successors". The same could be said about Astral Weeks, I guess.

Astral Weeks it's a contender for the "greatest album ever made" title in any contemporary music genre, yes. Actually, at least in the emotion part, it's unique, no other album has the emotional strenght and spirituality of this abum. Van's singing comes directly from the soul, when you truly open to this album you can feel your soul vibrate, it's so raw emotion... "Beside You" makes me cry everytime. This one can compete with any album, Pet Sounds(I'm a crazy fan), Dark Side Of The Moon, Whats Going On, Exile On Main Street, Kind Of Blue, sgt Peppers, Velvet Underground&Nico. This album is not worse definitely.

As Cassandra-Leo said, this is a one of a kind record. Nothing from any genre sounds like this and the feeling I get from listening to it is unlike the feeling evoked by any other album I've ever heard. The arrangements and playing are perfect, the impressionistic lyrics make "emotional" sense if not outright literal sense and Van's vocal performance is incredibly versatile and powerful. This is one of about four or five records I could consider a strong candidate for Best Album Ever.

Strong contender for greatest album of any genre ever recorded. There's nothing else like this, and there never will be.
