To ME, there’s only two types of jazz genres: “normal” jazz that normal people who listen to popular music can get down to and experimental jazz that only record-collecting or Internet-dwelling nerds enjoy.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting you but you say this as if no one makes this exact same argument about classical, rock, electronica, etc

Well, from that perspective, yeah, I guess you’re right. It just SEEMS more apparent with genres like jazz and, as you mentioned, classical music. In popular culture, smooth jazz, fusion styles, 59-60s trad pop, and 20s big band are mainstream-recognized whereas, there’s whole other world of fanaticism for third stream, free jazz, and avant-garde jazz.

It seems that way because jazz and classical are older. They've had more time to branch out into weirder, unexplored territories and subgenres with notorious reputations, though I'd argue we're already seeing this happen with other genres like hip hop, metal, industrial, etc. It's a pretty standard phenomenon that happens to many, if not most, musical traditions.

90% of the popular jazz out there is the same recycled kenny g shit that people put on in the background. its just the same shit over and over again, nothing interesting to it. you don't even have to search far for good jazz, coltrane and davis are surface level jazz musicians and they're some of the all time greats. avant jazz is good too btw

i’ll never understand how people so easily dismiss jazz music. it’s such a wonderful genre, both modern jazz and old skool stuff

If you don't like jazz guitar, you're missing Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, João Gilberto, Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Grant Green, Jim Hall, John McLaughlin, Earl Klugh, Eric Gale, Larry Carlton, Laurindo Almeida, Lee Ritenour, Ralph Towner, John Abercrombie, Herb Ellis, Al Di Meola, Lenny Breau , John Scofield, Charlie Byrd, Allan Holdsworth, Larry Coryell, Gabor Szabo, Stanley Jordan, Tal Farlow, Pat Metheny, Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessell, Grant Green and Jim Hall, to mention but a few. You can find a fairly short though quite precise article about the history of the jazz guitar here https://www.guitarchords247.com/the-history-of-jazz-guitar/. As for the drums, though not always at the forefront of jazz pieces, they do play an important part in the formation of jazz, especially when irregular time signatures are used. I do, however, get your point and I can and do enjoy jazz groups, such as trios, for example piano, bass and saxophone make a great combo

I think that's a very negative way to look at it, man. Genres of music aren't 'possessed' or 'stolen'. While music might have its origins in certain cultures, there are no restrictions on who can enjoy and play those kinds of music. Maybe in the realm of popular music some black artists might have been overshadowed by white artists who were pushed to the forefront based on their wider appeal to white audiences, and as a result could have had their livelihoods affected. Also, when it comes to cases of song sheets being stolen, or specific sounds being copied, that's another story. Music has no colour. The greatest music produced has been through collaborative efforts between people of all different cultures and backgrounds. That's what makes it so beautiful.
