Barneycore is an underground offshoot of the post-baroque military style of hardcore dreamfunk that became popular in Ethiopia in the 1970s. It combines childlike lyrics with deceptively simple and repetitive song structures to entice the listener into an almost dreamlike state which clears their mind of preconceived notions of life and the universe. Taking advantage of the temporary plasticity they induce in their listeners, Barneycore songs then pose difficult questions, such as: 'Who are you?' 'How can you be sure you exist?' and 'Do you believe in life after love?' Though it owes its existence primarily to Ethiopian dreamfunk, Barneycore is an ever evolving artform that is also influenced by national socialist black metal, avant-garde patriciancore, Nickelback, and Mozambiequean silencecore.
