black metal dudes complain about DSBM bedroom solo projects by teenagers, saying it's just emo garbage and not real black metal or whatever, but really those are fine, the true cringe lies with DSBM bands who actually take themselves really seriously and last a long time and achieve some level of success, shit like Shining and Forgotten Tomb, horrible.

For the lack of a better word, badass is how I describe it! Far from depressive, for me, it's the peculiar capability of creating a sense of empowerment through the sounds of despair and hopelessness that made me fall in love with dsbm. Few people will see and actually understand how amazing this is ! A genre founded in hopelessness capable of giving hope. When you embrance and accept your biggest fears and weakness, you become stronger. I guess that's how dsbm works

It's more like power metal / heavy metal about war. There's actually no such thing as "war metal". :P

The music is fantastic but those teens pretending to be depressive on FB because of this genre are just stupid.

Tbh, in terms of music I'd rather label it "melancholic black metal" in most cases. I guess the closest musical equivalent to depression is drone doom.

Wonderful genre. While it is true that a thousand cliché, gimmicky bands have spawned from its scene, some of these artists have created the most powerful, overwhelmingly emotional music that there is to be heard. The dense emotional dissonance evoken through the likes of Abyssic Hate, Trist, Xasthur, Wigrid, Wehmut and others are unparalled to anything else in terms of their entrancing atmospheric depth and catharsis.

That is kinda hard for me to choose objectively right now as I'm not as obssessed with the genre as I was one year ago, but thinking about it I would definitely put Trist's Zrcandlení Melancholie (astounding monotony and anxiety) (even though Jan hates the label and being labelled as such) alongside his debut, Stíny on a top five. Also there would be Wehmut's debut and his only release, Abyssic Hate's classic Suicidal Emotions (one of the main definers of the dsbm sound and the main influence for T.), Shining's III: Angst, Självdestruktivitetens Emissarie or Halmstad, and something from Hypothermia. Nyktalgia, Wigrid and Wedard are also poignant acts within the genre.

Trist's Zrcandlení Melancholie, Shining's Halmstad, and Xasthur's Telepathic with the Deceased were all born in a time when dsbm was not a trendy subgenre.. let alone *legendary* Death - Pierce Me. but soon after that things got out of hand.. especially after dsbm started to hook up with post-bm, e.g. Lifelover.

Lifelover itself had an unique approach to the despair and melancholy already developed throught the early and traditional, straightforward Black Metal. Just listen to Pulver, which was released in 2006, and notice how inventive the perfectly combined, harsh aggressivity of Metal with a Rock/post-Punkish basis turned out to be. The shitstorm came a little later.

yeah, i meant to say *after* ; ). lifelover did bring a gust of fresh air in about 200x, a successful experiment no matter we like it or not. imo they were (and still are) the best dsbm sound capturing the essence of urban solitude, despair and apathy. btw i like Erotik more than Pulver. but they are all in my pre-lastfm listen history lol
