Looks like we're going to the same show again (Flaming Lips). Did we just become best friends?! I missed my last would-be concert at Beak & Skiff due to schedule conflict, seems like a cool spot. I also just listened to Mogwai for the first time in forever today, how weird. No Ians involved in my Mogwai past.

I'd just like to jump in to say that the Ian collective approves of your listening to Mogwai despite not knowing him as a friend. Also I'll fight you for the best friends title. Or I definitely wont do that and we can figure out a shared custody agreement of last.fm best-friendship. Either way I hope you both enjoy the Flaming Lips show and listening to Mogwai sporadically!

okay just reading this and it actually made me lol. and shared custody agreement is definitely the fairest approach and I'm ready to sign. I'll also be sure to let (my) Ian know about his popularity on here, and you let (your) Ian know. he'll be quite pleased with the simultaneous Mogwai and general Ian love!

Sadly my Ian and I don't really talk too much these days and he's not super active on here, but I promise the next time we catch up I will let him know about this situation and hopefully he'll get a laugh out of it too. Just to prove his existence though his profile is here (https://www.last.fm/user/CynicalStrike) and Mogwai is his top all time artist.

you're gonna love this spot and what a beautiful place to catch the Flaming Lips! it's easily my favorite of all the contemporary NYS venues, I think I've seen 17-18 bands there in just 2 years if that's any indication. I'm also doing Gary Clark Jr., Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, and potentially Lake Street Dive. come say hi the day of the show, we have so much in common for music on here so why be strangers at these shows we're both going to!

i actually had a feeling the music compatibility was gonna swing towards high once you started listening to some common bands between us you that you just haven't scrobbled yet. i didn't realize your account was only a couple of years old until this morning, we probably have a ton of crossover in our music taste. my friend Ian loves Mogwai, he got me into them back in the day and i haven't had the opportunity to see them live yet unfortunately.

This is hilarious because it was someone named Ian that got ME into Mogwai! I have a conspiracy theory now that we have the same friend named Ian and you should definitely not try to convince me otherwise. And yeah I had an account way back at the start of last.fm and had thousands and thousands of scrobbles up until a few years ago.. Then I did this thing where I decided to delete my existence from the internet for a minute. Decided to come back here though after a while and now I'm very slowly rebuilding. I missed having the visual representation of the changes in my music habits over time. But I do also miss friends I used to have around here and checking in on whos listening to what. Trying to rebuild that to a degree as well. We definitely have much more in common after looking at your library and live list than previously thought. I just need to scrobble it all again. One song at a time.

Oh I totally understand that aversion, it's exactly what kept me away from it too lol. 90's pop country radio in my area did that to me. But if you ever want some recommendations within the genre, just let me know. I love when metal bands do that, slow precise progressions you mentioned. A really good recent example is this band called Agriculture that is a blackgaze band essentially, it's a heavy album at its core but there is a track on their newest album that is this perfect mix of neo country and folk. (my) Ian got me into them when their 1st EP dropped, I think you'll probably like them. And my main instrument is guitar, I've been playing now for about 23 years (sounds more impressive than it is, I just started early as a teenager. had some years where I barely played at all while focused on my career and other hobbies etc.) I just got really into it again in 2017-2018 and trying to complete songs. More recently I've been learning synthesis as I really wanna make my own EDM!

Haha I'm already stealing all of your 'last 7 days' and now this Agriculture band too which I am intensely curious about now.. give me a sec for the country recs. Need to resurface from drowning in all this first lol. And seriously any effort to participate in music is respectable in my book so two decades+ of effort is well worth some kudos. EDM seems like such a different monster all together but would be particularly fun to play with and learn I think. Plenty of depth and a lot of skills to explore there!

Oh wow, I'm genuinely curious of what you'll think of my last 7 days artists! Definitely report back, I've been on what feels like an unending search for female vocalist indie rock bands. Everything from power pop to shoegaze and all the sub genres in-between -- I just can't get enough of it. It's the range and power in women vocals that does it for me. I'm positive bands like The Beths, Beach Bunny, and Slow Pulp will always have a deep comforting hold on me. Also let me know about Agriculture, I'm curious if you're into that sort of black metal meets shoegaze kind of stuff. Early Deafheaven is what started it for me back in the day.

It's weird to find someone I have 'medium' compatibility with. Swear it's always everything or nothing usually. Speaking of Nothing - we have Nothing in common, as well as Gunship and Songs: Ohia. Hell yes. Weird mix of overlap. Also decided to shout at you loudly because you listened to the brand new Alcest track today as well. Know it's kinda early to judge but whadaya think of it?

Nothing is an interesting band, i wish i would have known about them when i was living in Philly so i could have caught them live. i need to listen to them more but i dig their approach to shoegaze in general. yeah Gunship and Songs: Ohia are some favorite bands of mine, really hoping for a Gunship tour! and i dug the new Alcest single, i'll be curious to hear what the rest of the album is like. Spiritual Instinct album is what really got me into them and is my go-to.

Man, a Gunship tour would be amazing. Listened to their first two albums like crazy but I admit I haven't listened to the new one too much. DooM Dance is awesome though. How can you lose with Gavin and Carpenter Brut on your track? Yeah I'm definitely excited to see a new album from Alcest and I agree the single was pretty diggable. Spiritual Instinct is absolutely solid and probably what I listen to most from them, but Shelter holds a special place for me too. Into the Waves is easily one of my all time favorite songs.

i'm totally with you on the Gunship album trajectory, their 1st album in particular is still absolute perfection and is the magnum opus of the synthwave genre in general in my opinion. 2nd album really grew on me over time as well. the 3rd album really has some great tracks like the one you mentioned (my favorite is the one featuring Lights, but i really like her music in general), but the album isn't gripping me like their previous releases did. that's okay though, artists evolve and change. i think i just want different iterations of their 1st album which isn't a fair ask of them as a fan.

Ah I feel you. Nothing is quite gonna be like that first time I found the Tech Noir music video and listened to the album like 10 times in a row. I want the same feeling with every new release and that's definitely unfair. I try to appreciate the evolutions for what they are though.

I also noticed you're gonna be at that Waxahatchee show in downstate NY later this year, I'm so excited to see her again. I've got a feeling this show is gonna be one for the books! Can't wait for her new album and hearing some of it live, Katie just doesn't miss.

thanks man. I've seen a decent percentage of your top 50 artists live once or more (e.g. Tool, Dillinger, NIN, APC, Deftones, Converge, Mars Volta, Meshuggah, Incubus). still a metalhead at heart even if I listen to more indie and EDM stuff these days. let me know if you want any heavier recommendations, bands like Car Bomb and Johnny Booth are up your alley if you don't listen to them already.

Unfortunately not! I'm still upset about it, I bought two tickets months in advance, but my friend ditched out on me at the last minute. I had planned seven months in advance to smoke with Intronaut, and I probably would have smoked with Ben (cloudkicker) as well. I hope they do it again. You live far from Cleveland, I take it?
