haha no, it could be it's just not that good. Good point though, maybe it will sound better in September. I thought Pond only released 2 albums, now I see the number is actually 4. I still haven't checked out anything beyond BWD but i think I'll start with Frond. As for acid jazz, I'm not all that familiar with this term (had to look it up really) or which artists fall into this genre. Usually I just divide jazz artists into 2 categories: slower paced / faster paced jazz lol. Recently I came across Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro which are more on the funkier side and I really like the fast tempo! And I've been playing a lot of Ennio Morricone lately, mostly soundtracks from italian giallo films. Sorry, I'm not sure if he even falls into this genre...but I honestly don't know if your question was based on my recently played music or you just wanted to ask if I happen to know/like the genre XD

I messed up my previous comment. The "latter" was obviously supposed to be BWD. Thanks for mentioning the band, I went with their new stuff first and definitely got into it. "So much going on" is the perfect way to describe some of the songs. Like the ones I mentioned the other day...you're halfway through a song and it just feels like you're discovering a song within a song (if that makes sense). Btw, have you heard the new Tame Impala track called "Elephant"? To be honest, I'm not feeling this one at all...it's pretty annoying!!

They are like Tame Impala 2.0. I can't help but compare "Beard, Wives, Denim" to Innerspeaker. I think the latter has more standout tracks and is a better from start to finish album. The one track that really stands out on BWD (to me at least) is Eye Pattern Blindness...there are several other very good songs, particularly Allergies, Sorry I was under the sky, Elegant Design. Overall a pretty good album, I tend to skip a song here and there, though.

To quote Kevin Parker: "But I also have a desire to sound like Britney Spears, I love pop music. On the one hand this album is weird and fucked up, but on the other hand very pop". - naturally, this had me a little concerned but hearing the Apocalypse Dreams...it should be a good one (or maybe we're still in for a surprise). I haven't heard of them (Pond) until now. I checked two random songs on youtube, sounds pretty good. Will give them a proper listen later on, thanks.

Very much, it's incredible. Had it on repeat since they released it this week. Nice little tease for the new album, my expectations are definitely rising.

Great choices, those two tracks. There are still some other gems for you to discover though...you'll find them sooner rather than later :p Did you mean favourite stuff by graveyard or favourite stuff in general? Yeah, I use the music player on my phone a lot. It's not an android (or whatever those new types are) so I can't scrobble a damn thing with it. What do you use?

Don't mention it. You've introduced me to a lot of good artists that I wasn't aware of...so I'm glad I got one right :) Did you check out both of their albums or just "Hisingen Blues"? The self-titled album from 2007 is also a good one, some mighty fine tracks on there. You know why I checked them out in the first place? The album cover (for Hisingen Blues) - it's one of the best I've seen in recent years.

Ah, yes. I forgot about that one. That's another good track. And if you ask me, "Remember me" had potential to be a good one too, but it was ruined by you know which part. I'll probably get sick of it fairly quickly. I enjoy most of their demos though.

Hey, gotta say I like the demos (as well as other tracks) a lot. "Remember me" was the one track I didn't like at first. That ggggg part that kicks in at 0:30 bothered me, but something's changed, now I like that one as well - it's a pretty catchy tune. My other favourites are Sundown Syndrome, The Serpentine, My Lover Mother Nature and Into the Jungle. I'm already looking forward to their next album! btw...did you end up seeing the Blood Ceremony show?

LOL. Yeah, mostly chocolates and some cash. Money is kind of a lame gift but what the heck...it comes in handy. ..in other news...soundgarden is scheduled to perform in italy this june (sorry montreal :p). Just heard this today and I'm officially excited. Will wait a bit to see if they add more shows before I buy my milano ticket!!!

It's not on a soundtrack, but it's possible. I can't say for sure as I only saw a few scenes. Was the movie any good at all? I remember seeing Cornell in it, though it was for a few seconds. Poor guy had no lines. ...Mine was all right. I spent it in my hometown...I don't know...this one kind of went by pretty fast. I tried getting in that jolly good mood too, but having no snow for christmas bugs the hell out of me haha. How was yours? Oh, and (a very late) merry christmas to you too :)

Indeed. Ugh, that happens way too often. "Seasons" was actually on a soundtrack for a movie "Singles". It's supposed to be this cheesy romantic comedy from 1992, but I never watched the whole movie...I only paid attention to the music. The soundtrack is pretty great and it includes a soundgarden gem - "birth ritual" ...so this means you saw him tour his scream album, right? lol, neat. Hopefully, it was still worth it. I forgot to mention, Temple of the dog is probably my 2nd favourite project by chris. They (Chris, Matt + some pearl jam dudes) were a one time thing, but they sure were a lot better than chris' post-soundgarden projects.

I don't consider myself a BIG fan either to be honest :p I do however find them quite enjoyable. The thing with all these stoner/doom bands is...well, I can listen to certain bands one week, forget about them the next, and then rediscover them a few months later. Same thing happened with Jex Thoth. There are actually very few stoner bands I can listen to week after week. You know, I actually enjoyed Audioslave's 1st album for a little while, but not so much anymore (maybe a song here and there). As for Chris' solo material...it's pretty mediocre, as you said. The only song I really, really like is "Seasons".

Good stuff. I really dig the flute, it's something I haven't heard before in this genre. Upon first listen I liked the 2nd album (just) a tad better. Thanks for the recommendation btw. There's a similar band out there that you should check out. Jex Thoth is the name of the band...their singer really carries their self titled album - my favourite tracks would include "nothing left to die", "seperated at birth", "warrior woman" and "equinox suite D". ...yeah, and it's weird how Chris suddenly changed his mind about the whole thing, considering he was doing that "awesome" timbaland collaboration not to long ago.

I always thought it was the other way around. I remember Kim saying that he would be interested in a reunion in a heartbeat...actually what he said was that he'd do it for a few beers...and that Ben & Matt would probably do it too...Chris, however, would need a lot more convincing. But yeah, at this point I don't even care that much...I just hope they stay together for a while...give us a solid record and lots and LOTS of shows.

It does suck, but it's either that or you're stuck with going to mediocre shows here. It's not always bad...there are still some decent shows to go to. We had elton john a month ago :p For your sake, I hope they (soundgarden) do come to Montreal :p Them reuniting is probably my favourite comeback story ever. Ohhh, you got to see qotsa...ok now I'm jealous :p They had a show here once (8 years ago) but I missed it...probably because I was a kid + nobody wanted to go anyway. Now every time I listen to this live version of "if only" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9c0hxcYX7QE), I die a little inside.lol I shall give blood ceremony a listen. I've seen them in my last.fm reccomendations before...and you giving them thumbs up doesn't hurt either:p

lol, yeah...he probably feeds off of that stuff. Well, currently I live in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, and from here you can get to Padova (Italy) in about 3 hours..which is not a lot considering it usually takes me 4 hours to get to my hometown on the north east. So...it depends on your definition of a long trip :p Young folks from around here are kind of used to travelling to italy, austria, croatia, even germany to see shows...as some are pretty well organized (from transportation aspect). Are you planning to see anything good in the upcoming months? :) "13 dates of doom" sounds promising, I'm guessing it's the swedish ghost though.

Yes I am :) They were fantastic. They played for about 2 hours and had a nice setlist which ended with zero & bullet with butterfly wings. And they also played my favourite - thru the eyes of ruby. Corgan's stage presence is really something else, he looks untouchable out there. Never seen anybody take the stage with such authority. The show would be even better if it wasn't for this shirtless, sweaty old guy on my left, ugh, dude was bouncing off of everybody...plus the airing was terrible. Eh, and Billy's actually a nice guy. My sister and her friend were being pushed around badly somewhere up front...he saw that, warned his bodyguard about it and pointed at them. They felt pretty special afterwards. All in all it was pretty fuckin great.

...thought I'd let you know that I managed to find a different version of "gamble" after all :) I was reading a review on ringo's heisei fuuzoku and the author mentioned gamble as a re-done song. Found it on Zeccho Shuu, a compilation of live tracks and singles...although I am not sure it's one of the official releases. The track is called "gambling" and it's a pretty wild version. Gamble was one of the first tracks by her that I really, really liked ...so you can understand my excitement.

So true. I like how you put the word normal in quotation marks, haha. I'm having a hard time explaining the genre myself. Guitar tone may be a simple answer but it's the right one. Usually I point out the obvious: a bass heavy sound, low tuned guitars, slow tempo. It also helps to compare the sound to that of other genres (heavy metal for instance, or something similar with guitarists competing who can play faster:P) I simply say...don't expect fast guitars in this genre because most of the time they are not. The pace can be really slow at times but the riffs can actually be a lot heavier than you'd imagine. That's pretty much it.

hey, well put :) lol you should have known better. There are certain rules you must follow as a stoner rock enthusiast. It's ok to switch between genres...but to move on from stoner completely, that's a big no-no. Didn't you read the manual?? :P You picked the right time to get back into sabbath. Apparently, they are making a comeback (with a new studio album) next year. It remains to be seen whether they'll be any good but whatever, it's the sabbath...if they fail to deliver, I'll just go back to the old stuff.

I looked it up on youtube...god damn that song is FINE! And it gets even better with every listen. You know, I actually heard of this band before. It was posted on stonerobixxx but for some reason I overlooked it. Oh well, better late than never. (http://stonerobixxx.blogspot.com/ you should totally check it out if you haven't already, it's like stoner/doom heaven on there. The guy who runs the site posts lots of great material...lots of under the radar bands as well. When I search for albums I usually go there instead of torrent sites; quality rips too) Anyway...thanks!!

The first 4, yeah. I do like the rest though. Still, Snuffbox Immanence deserves more praise as it is a better start to finish album (in my opinion) and has a few standouts as well. I'm a little surprised that an artist like her doesn't get more recognition outside of Japan. But yeah...to really blow up, that's not exactly possible for non-american artists. Meh, it comes down to the listeners. Most of them just don't bother to dig deeper.

haha, I hear you. The vocals can indeed be annoying at times but that never really bothered me. It took me a while to get into the rest of their material (started off with hypnotic underworld as well)...but now I actually favor their Snuffbox Immanence because it's just so interesting instrumentally. To be honest, I can pretty much listen to anything that involves Michio Kurihara (he can do no wrong in my eyes:P) Yeah, Hazy Paradise is wonderful...the only tracks on hypnotic underworld that I can't really get into are h.u. parts1-4.

Props to you for taking appreciation of this artist to a whole new level. Hooked? I guess you can say that. Over the last few weeks I've mostly been getting to know her solo stuff...I should give some more attention to Tokyo Jihen...but they'll have to wait an extra few days. I was wondering, do you happen to know (or like for that matter) japanese Ghost?

I have. That just might be the only single I've checked so far. I should really get around that singles box soon. Nice video, that first one. The second one doesn't work though. You're posting these restricted videos on purpose, aren't you? Well, at least someone can enjoy them, right... Hey, too bad there's only one version of "gamble". I would love to hear a different version of it.

Indeed it is. I am not of the opinion that all electro sucks by any means...actually, I think you can find good artists in (almost) every genre. Massive Attack ..and their "teardrop" comes to mind - I think they are considered electro but what do I know. Anyway...I don't know where I came across that song (probably in some movie or a tv show) but I always liked it. Now I don't think I'll be purposely exploring electronic music anytime soon...however, I will keep my ears open just in case something good unexpectedly comes my way :p ...on another note, I just realized that listening to tracks like ishiki and meisai is even better when you first listen to one version (lets say i start with heisei fuzoku) and then switch to another one straightaway (karuki...)

Interesting, those two are probably my least favourite tracks on heisei fuzoku. Oiran is the type of song I can't grow to like (not at this point at least)...I always skip it! Hatsukoi Shoujo is ok but I enjoy other songs a lot more. It just comes down to personal taste really..electronic music was never my thing. Nevertheless..heisei fuzoku is still a favourite of mine, as the rest of the songs are fantastic.

Yeah, and what about Dead Meadow's Old Growth? You've got 'What needs must be' and then...hmmm...oh right...the only other track I can think of is 'Till kingdom come'...but that's ok. I know I'm overplaying what needs must be...but I love that one and haven't gotten sick of it yet. As for Spindrift...these guys are goooood. Having red reflection on repeat...I don't think that's something I can avoid. It's just too damn catchy. I'm a sucker for catchy tracks like that. I'm already checking out some other stuff by them...so I won't feel bad about ignoring everything else but 'red reflection'.

So far I have only listened to 'kuki' from that album, will give the rest a listen in the next few days. She has quite a lot of material to choose from...which is obviously a good thing, but when I find a personal favorite (I'm talking about heise fuzoku here) I tend to play it repeatedly. Thus is takes some time before I explore the next album. // Cool review, seems like you had a decent time :p ...and a 4 hour show?? Sounds awesome indeed. Bringing home some nice memorabilia doesn't hurt either.

For sure. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say it's one of the finest tracks I've heard all year. I haven't given all her albums a chance yet, but I enjoy heisei fuzoku the most right now. I really like the first video you posted. Can that version be found on any of their albums? Like the 2nd one as well (think I came across that one already), but can't play the 3rd one due to EMI copyright law, bastards. Judging by these two videos, they are also a joy to hear live.

So, I've listened to a few albums by Tokyo Jihen & Shiina Ringo...enough to form an opinion. I was afraid both of them would be too pop for my taste, but that hasn't been the case at all. I mean sure..there is a song here and there that I don't like too much, but overall I find them quite enjoyable. What I like the most about the albums is the nice mixture of genres, especially the jazzier stuff that works well with rock music. Pretty, pretty good...
